    2020 TSLRRA Annual Meeting

An opportunity to network and help support this important organization

TGB Group was excited to attend and sponsor the TSLRRA Annual Meeting Jan. 23-25, 2020 at the Beeman Hotel in Dallas. We’ve been a member of the Texas Short Line & Regional Railroad Association for three years and have always considered it an important part of our professional lives.

Among its many other activities, the TSLRRA provides us with vital details about current short line rail news on local and legislative levels.

Why we attend the TSLRRA Annual Meeting

It’s important for us to support an organization like TSLRRA as they continue their outreach to help smaller “mom and pop” railroads.  The annual meeting is one of the ways they do it, and every year the event includes the opportunity to network with others in the railroad industry and hear informative talks from leading speakers.

This year’s TSLRRA Annual Meeting featured guest speaker Ed Emmett, a former Harris County Judge and Texas Department of Transportation Freight Advisory Committee member.

Because of their smaller size, short line railroads often are overlooked, yet they’re quite important for the farms and factories that connect with large shipping concerns and exporters. Past TSLRRA Annual Meeting/luncheon events have provided us with information regarding heavy regulatory initiatives, which can stand in the way of economic growth and Austin short line tax credit.

Short line associations are pushing Congress to make a tax credit permanent to help short lines improve infrastructure. modal equity and the benefits of membership through growth.

    About TSLRRA

The Texas Short Line & Regional Railroad Association is a nonprofit professional organization representing the interests of the more than 40 short line railroads and industry related businesses in Texas.

Established in 2003, TSLRRA’s purpose has been to promote the state’s economy, champion public safety issues and partner with local governments and organizations to enhance the transportation infrastructure and bring new jobs and prosperity to Texas communities. TGB Group Attends Logistics Development Forum

Event focused on site-selection and supply chain priorities

Our president, Mike Murphy, recently attended a Logistics Development Forum event in Vail, Colo., that focused on helping leaders in the trade and economic development industries learn more about site selection and supply chain management priorities.

TGB Group also was a sponsor for the golf event connected to the forum, which was held August 5-7 at Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail.

Highlights of the Logistics Development Forum

One of the key functions of the 2019 Logistics Development Forum was to give economic developers and site consultants the opportunity to share information on the many elements involved in determining the optimal location for manufacturing distribution centers and warehouse operations.

Attendees participated in individual meetings, took part in educational sessions and built valuable networking relationships with industry peers.

On the Logistics Development Forum Program Overview page for the upcoming 2020 edition of the event, advantages of attending this forum are explained and include:

    • The chance to hear industry experts speak about logistics-intensive projects
    • Special sessions focused on the role of logistics in deciding on the location of a new site
    • It’s the only conference that deals with the importance of the site-selection process and supply chain
    • An excellent way to forge partnerships and build relationships with other industry professionals

Mike and the rest of the TGB Group team reserve time throughout every year to attend and sponsor these types of events.  Meeting and talking with experts in our industry helps us to keep abreast of the latest developments and advanced techniques, which in turn allows us to continue to deliver superior results to our clients.

    Other conferences on our schedule

In addition to the Logistics Development Forum, our representatives also will attend the following 2019 conferences:

  • “Measure Twice, Cut Once”: A Critical Principle in Our Project Management Services

“Measure Twice, Cut Once”: A Critical Principle in Our Project Management Services

The importance of accurate measurement can’t be overemphasized

One of TGB Group’s signature project management services is construction staking.  Accurate measurement in this discipline is the first step toward success, and the benefits of measuring twice and double-checking those measurements are huge.  Correctly staking a project layout is a crucial activity that when done right prevents countless construction delays and mistakes that often can’t be undone and likely will cause more time and money to be spent than what was allocated in the budget.

Taking shortcuts to complete a project might seem tempting initially.  A faster work process, quicker completion of various project management services phases, an easier time doing the mundane groundwork – one might think all this will lead to saving money at the end of the day.  However, failure to double check a plan, its measurements and its requirements can be very costly.

Quality project management services includes best-fixes, not quick-fixes

Though we live in an age where impatience has become the norm and quick-fixes often take the place of best-fixes, TGB Group professionals are not in the practice of cutting corners and wasting valuable time and resources.  Your project is unique to your business and important to us, so we take the time to “measure twice, cut once,” as the wise old adage goes.

We’re happy to spend time early in the project verifying results and laying the foundation for cost-effective success so we don’t have to waste time later re-calculating what should have been calculated correctly the first time.  Undoing something and then redoing it does not make for happy engineers.

TGB Group’s highly skilled team provides exceptional consulting, design and project management services to our railroad, commercial, industrial and economic development clients.  We can execute any size project, from a simple parking lot to a thousand-acre or larger multi-use industrial park.  We design solutions to meet a project’s goals and constraints.

With more than 70 years’ combined experience, we are focused on client satisfaction and dedicated to delivering high-quality products to our clients and yours.  When you work with us, you can be assured that impatience, shortcuts and mis-measuring will not wreak unexpected havoc with your budget!

  • TGB Hired for Track Design Project in Fort Worth, Texas

TGB Hired for Track Design Project in Fort Worth, Texas

Project to include more than 1,000 feet of track, drainage enhancements and connection to an industrial lead track

TGB Group has contracted with Transwestern Asset Services to design a rail spur as part of a track design project for a large international paper and packaging manufacturing client.  The project is located in the Railhead Industrial Park in north Fort Worth and will be connected to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.

Design for the project was completed in January 2019.  The design included drainage enhancements to the existing site, more than 1,000 feet of track, a concrete road crossing and connection to an existing BNSF-served industrial lead track.  Our track design project team worked with the railroad to fast-track the approval to meet our client’s deadline.

TGB obtained pricing and awarded the contract to New York- and Texas-based RailWorks, which is responsible for track construction, and Shackelford Construction & Hauling, LLC, of Yazoo City, Miss., which will manage civil construction.  Current plans call for construction of the track design project to start in late February or early March 2019.

In addition to providing comprehensive design services for this track design project in Texas, TGB personnel will be present at the site during construction to oversee the project, making sure it is built according to our client’s specifications.

    About Railhead Industrial Park

Railhead Industrial Park is the only industrial complex that offers dual rail service in north Texas.  The west side of the park is bordered by Union Pacific Railroad; Burlington Northern Santa Fe and a primary NAFTA operations yard can be directly accessed on the east side of the park.  When completely built, the park will cover 583.5 acres with about 10 million square feet of office, industrial and warehouse space.

  • Industrial Park Expansion Makes News in Big Spring

Industrial Park Expansion Makes News in Big Spring

TGB Group provided engineering design and construction management for the project

TGB Group is in the news again – this time in Big Spring, Texas, where the company is providing design and construction management services for a major rail industrial park expansion.

The project, launched by the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation (BSEDC), is big news in this city of approximately 27,000. A July 9, 2018 article on NewsWest9.com based in Midland, Texas, pointed out that the “[railroad] track is the road to expansion for the City of Big Spring.”

The McMahon-Wrinkle Air and Industrial Park expansion will involve laying an additional 8,000 feet of track and extending the main line track to allow access to properties near the park.

In a video and accompanying news article, BSEDC Executive Director Terry Wegman said, “This is a continuation of almost six miles of track that we’ve done over the last several years to accommodate existing business and help attract new business to the airport.”

Video of Big Spring Railroad Project

Services TGB has been responsible for during the expansion at the former WWII airfield include topographic survey and construction staking; complete engineering design; preparation of necessary forms to obtain FAA, air park and railroad approvals; and construction administration. You can read more about this project in an article we wrote in October of last year.

TGB President Mike Murphy, who is overseeing his company’s work on the project, told NewsWest9, “The idea is to bring more customers to Big Spring and make them feel comfortable that we have everybody in the room they need to build their project.”

This is just one of many TGB projects focused on enhancing the economic climate in cities throughout Texas and in nearby states.
