TGB Group Hired for Port of Victoria Rail Infrastructure Project

Work to include a master plan for water, rail and highway transportation

TGB Group has entered into an agreement for consulting services in the Port of Victoria rail infrastructure project. Our team will help the Port identify ways to develop rail infrastructure and operations along with other development efforts for land surrounding the port.

We’ll begin by designing an industrial and rail-centric master plan for the property with the overall concept of a multi-modal facility offering transportation by water, rail and highway. When the plan is complete, we’ll work with the Port to outline the next steps to take to further the development of rail operations while considering building additional infrastructure.

Port of Victoria Rail Infrastructure Project Specs

The Port turning basin area is situated on more than 2,000 acres and is served by rail and four-lane divided highways.

POV Dock No. 1 is a 350-foot transit dock. A new lighting system allows for 24-hour cargo operations. Twenty mooring sites, 17,000 square feet of shed space and more than three acres of improved ground storage areas are available. A 7,300-square-foot office and storage building is ready for occupancy.

POV Dock No. 2 is an 800-foot string pier available for docking sites and barge repair. Major products transferred are liquid and dry bulk and general and project cargo. The Port of Victoria’s mission is to provide waterway transportation capabilities to create economic opportunity in the region.

The Port recently created an industrial park with multi-modal access. The park is located within a foreign trade zone and a Texas Enterprise Zone. The Port has the ability to “build to suit” and tailor a package specific to the facility and transportation needs of customers.

A major cost savings was realized by including the basin expansion with the completion of the widening and deepening of the canal. In addition to almost doubling the size of the harbor, a 400-foot-by-150-foot barge slip was added for greater safety and efficiency.

TGB’s work on the Port of Victoria rail infrastructure project will allow the Port to realize many of its expansion and development targets.

  • TGB Group Sponsors Golf Fundraiser Event

TGB Group Sponsors Golf Fundraiser Event

Nearly 200 Rail Industry Golfers Participated

For the fifth consecutive year, TGB Groups has helped to sponsor the annual golf fundraiser held by the Southwest Association of Rail Shippers (SWARS). This year’s event happened at the Trails of The Woodlands club in The Woodlands, Texas.

The October 2, 2020 golf fundraiser event was attended by 196 golfers from companies associated with the rail industry.

TGB group sponsored the 7th hole on the Oaks Course, one of two courses at the Trails of The Woodlands. For this hole, the winner would be the golfer who could hit the longest drive. That honor went to Mark Dearing, owner of Vertex Builders.

Other incentives at the SWARS golf fundraiser included the longest putt, the closest approach shot and a $10,000 hole-in-one challenge.

Golf fundraiser benefits a scholarship fund

As in years past, the golfing event raised money for the George Elking, Jr. Scholarship Fund.

Elking is known within the rail industry, having served as SWARS president in 1995 and then as president of the North American Association of Rail Shippers in 1998.

TGB Group is always excited to play in the golf fundraiser event and help support the Elking scholarship. Our employs have participated for the past 15 years, and we’ve been a proud hole sponsor since 2016.

The large turnout of nearly 200 golfers shows the unity of many companies within the rail industry. We’re like a brotherhood – and sisterhood – who have built multiple industry connections and always enjoy getting reacquainted with the folks who make railroads run.

    SWARS meetings

The golfing event fundraisers are held twice a year, always in conjunction with official SWARS meetings. We encourage individuals and companies in the rail industry to be part of the meetings, where critical information is discussed and to get involved in the golf fundraiser as a player or sponsor, where a good time is always guaranteed.

Here’s a recap of our last SWARS golfing event.

Commtrex, creators of a popular online Rail Services Directory, has for the second year in a row named TGB Group as a top-10 railroad engineering services company.  The announcement was formally made in September 2019 on Commtrex.com.

Our entire team is proud of this honor, because it tells us we’re doing things right and providing the quality railroad engineering services that help our clients meet and exceed their construction and expansion goals.

This year’s Top 10 Railroad Engineering Services Company award went to leading engineering firms across the USA in places like Matthews, N.C., Brentwood, Tenn., Louisville, Ken., Greely, Colo., and Beaumont and Houston, Texas.

We thought it was interesting that three Texas-based railroad engineering services companies made the list – the most from any state.  But it’s not surprising: Texans have always been known for doing jobs right.

  • “Measure Twice, Cut Once”: A Critical Principle in Our Project Management Services

“Measure Twice, Cut Once”: A Critical Principle in Our Project Management Services

The importance of accurate measurement can’t be overemphasized

One of TGB Group’s signature project management services is construction staking.  Accurate measurement in this discipline is the first step toward success, and the benefits of measuring twice and double-checking those measurements are huge.  Correctly staking a project layout is a crucial activity that when done right prevents countless construction delays and mistakes that often can’t be undone and likely will cause more time and money to be spent than what was allocated in the budget.

Taking shortcuts to complete a project might seem tempting initially.  A faster work process, quicker completion of various project management services phases, an easier time doing the mundane groundwork – one might think all this will lead to saving money at the end of the day.  However, failure to double check a plan, its measurements and its requirements can be very costly.

Quality project management services includes best-fixes, not quick-fixes

Though we live in an age where impatience has become the norm and quick-fixes often take the place of best-fixes, TGB Group professionals are not in the practice of cutting corners and wasting valuable time and resources.  Your project is unique to your business and important to us, so we take the time to “measure twice, cut once,” as the wise old adage goes.

We’re happy to spend time early in the project verifying results and laying the foundation for cost-effective success so we don’t have to waste time later re-calculating what should have been calculated correctly the first time.  Undoing something and then redoing it does not make for happy engineers.

TGB Group’s highly skilled team provides exceptional consulting, design and project management services to our railroad, commercial, industrial and economic development clients.  We can execute any size project, from a simple parking lot to a thousand-acre or larger multi-use industrial park.  We design solutions to meet a project’s goals and constraints.

With more than 70 years’ combined experience, we are focused on client satisfaction and dedicated to delivering high-quality products to our clients and yours.  When you work with us, you can be assured that impatience, shortcuts and mis-measuring will not wreak unexpected havoc with your budget!

  • TGB Hired for Track Design Project in Fort Worth, Texas

TGB Hired for Track Design Project in Fort Worth, Texas

Project to include more than 1,000 feet of track, drainage enhancements and connection to an industrial lead track

TGB Group has contracted with Transwestern Asset Services to design a rail spur as part of a track design project for a large international paper and packaging manufacturing client.  The project is located in the Railhead Industrial Park in north Fort Worth and will be connected to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.

Design for the project was completed in January 2019.  The design included drainage enhancements to the existing site, more than 1,000 feet of track, a concrete road crossing and connection to an existing BNSF-served industrial lead track.  Our track design project team worked with the railroad to fast-track the approval to meet our client’s deadline.

TGB obtained pricing and awarded the contract to New York- and Texas-based RailWorks, which is responsible for track construction, and Shackelford Construction & Hauling, LLC, of Yazoo City, Miss., which will manage civil construction.  Current plans call for construction of the track design project to start in late February or early March 2019.

In addition to providing comprehensive design services for this track design project in Texas, TGB personnel will be present at the site during construction to oversee the project, making sure it is built according to our client’s specifications.

    About Railhead Industrial Park

Railhead Industrial Park is the only industrial complex that offers dual rail service in north Texas.  The west side of the park is bordered by Union Pacific Railroad; Burlington Northern Santa Fe and a primary NAFTA operations yard can be directly accessed on the east side of the park.  When completely built, the park will cover 583.5 acres with about 10 million square feet of office, industrial and warehouse space.

  • Isomeric Industries, Inc. Selects TGB Group for Track Expansion Project

Isomeric Industries, Inc. Selects TGB Group for Track Expansion Project

Work started in December at McMahon Wrinkle Industrial Park in Big Spring, Texas

TGB Group has been selected to design and build Isomeric’s track expansion project at the McMahon Wrinkle Industrial Park in Big Spring, Texas.  We began working with Isomeric to identify locations for a track expansion to support the growth in their business.  Our team provided consulting and conceptual design services to help determine the best location.  Isomeric then selected us to manage the entire process.

We’re providing survey, design, bidding services, construction management and on-site construction observation services for the project, which entered the design phase this month.  We expect construction of the track expansion project to be completed early in the second quarter of 2019.

Track expansion project and other work in Big Spring

TGB Group has been the civil engineer of choice for rail projects in Big Spring for many years.  We recently completed a large expansion for the Big Spring Railroad’s (BSR) Tarmac Yard and the design of Alor Trucking’s new transloading facility.  Several other rail expansion projects are slated for 2019 that will further expand the Big Spring Railroad’s ability to store railcars for customers as well as transload railcars for customers in need of these services.

Big Spring Rail Systems, Inc. maintains and operates approximately six miles of rail line in Howard County, Texas, over trackage owned by the City of Big Spring.

BSR was established in August 2012 as part of an economic development project by the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation.  It was created to initiate opportunities to transport and distribute product for customers, promoting the accessibility and utilization of existing rail service that was not previously possible.  BSR is headquartered in West Chester, Pa.  The firm interchanges traffic with Union Pacific railroad and is located just west of its Big Spring yard.

Texas state and local officials have recognized the economic growth that coincides with improving transportation infrastructure.  These investments put a focus on transportation projects while benefiting the community and stimulating economic growth.  Big Spring has been referred to as the “crossroads of west Texas” due to it’s being the only city in the western portion of the state with access to interstate highways going north, south, east and west.  In addition to existing highways and an airpark, BSR is building on this with the inclusion of rail service.

Railcar Unloading Facilities in Gonzales, Texas

TGB Group providing consulting and design services

TGB Group was selected to design railcar unloading facilities including a track and an unloading pit for a national feed company.  The firm is locating a new production and distribution center in Gonzales, Texas, about 125 miles west of Houston.

Railcar unloading facilities to handle cattle feed components

Our team provided conceptual design drawings for the Texas, Gonzales and Northern Railway that helped to bring this customer to Gonzales.  Now we’re in the process of providing consulting and design services for their track, drainage system and unloading pit.  As part of the railcar unloading facilities, these areas will be used to bring in cattle feed components by railcar and trucks for blending, packaging and distribution in the region.

We are also assisting this client with site-development services that include drainage plans to keep stormwater away from buildings and roadways at the site.  We’re using AutoTurn software to develop routes though out the property that allow trucks to efficiently enter, load/unload and exit.  When completed, the railcar unloading facilities will allow the client to increase operational efficiency and revenue.

A little history of Gonzales, Texas, from Wikipedia.

Gonzales was the site of the first skirmish of the Texas Revolution. In 1831, the Mexican Government gave the town a small cannon for protection against Indian attacks.  At the outbreak of disputes between the Anglo settlers and the Mexican authorities in 1835, a contingent of more than 100 Mexican soldiers was sent from San Antonio to retrieve the cannon.

When the soldiers arrived, there were only 18 men in Gonzales, but they refused to return the cannon, and soon men from the surrounding area joined them.  Texians, as they were known, under the command of John Henry Moore confronted them.  Sarah DeWitt and her daughter sewed a flag bearing the likeness of the cannon and the words “Come and Take It,” which was flown when the first shots of Texan independence were fired on October 2, 1835.  The Texians successfully resisted the Mexican troops in what became known as the Battle of Gonzales.  (From Wikipedia.)
